Tuesday, June 30, 2009

Latest advice for Principals

The advice from the Public Health Agency is that we use these summer months to plan for an increase in confirmed swine flu cases from October 09- February 10.

Advice for schools:
- Maintain good hygiene.
- Ensure you have hot & cold running water
- Have sufficient stocks of paper hand towels and liquid soap.
- Report any fault with the hot water system to the relevant E&LB.
- Update contingency plans
- Ensure contact details for both staff & parents are up to date ( including out of hours details)
- Ensure contact details for external agencies are up to date (including out of hours details)
- If school staff are made aware of a confirmed case they should not be within one metre of confirmed case for more than one hour
- If a pupil is returning from a transmitting country and they are showing flu like symptoms they should remain at home and contact their GP.
- Principals should regularly visit the DHSPPS website during the summer holidays to keep themselves up to date on any developments.

PHA will have a clearer picture of the spread of the disease by September and this will help inform decisions for schools.
